Imagine eating your favorite ice cream when all of a sudden this blinding pain shoots up from your tooth making you cringe and in the verge of tears. If that’s too much, how about that foreboding throbbing pain emanating from your gums from a damaged tooth?

Regardless of what causes your toothache, we need to find a solution and fast because the pain radiating from this part of our body can unhinge even the toughest of men. Most of us will rely on antibiotics and pain medications to make the pain disappear but too much of this can actually make us immune to its effects. So why not try alternative treatments?

If you are looking for an alternative to pain medication, here are some natural remedies that can reduce the pain associated with toothache.

  1. Garlic. Garlic is often recommended to treating toothache because it works as an antibiotic. You can either chew a clove or two cloves of garlic to minimize the pain or combine some garlic powder with black salt or table salt then apply on the affected tooth. The pain is guaranteed to disappear eventually.
  2. Peppermint tea. This particular tea is not only cool to the mouth but it can also help numb toothache. Add a teaspoon of dry peppermint leaves in a cup of boiling water and let the leaves steep for 20 minutes. Swish the liquid in your mouth once it cools then you either swallow or spit. You can repeat this treatment as often as you want.
  3. Onion. For those who are suffering from toothache, chewing on an onion can help. Onion is known for its antimicrobial and antiseptic properties which can provide relief from the pain while at the same time reduce inflammation and infection. If you feel a small amount of pain coming from your tooth, chew on an onion immediately. You can also place a slice of onion on the affected tooth if you like to help minimize the effects of toothache.
  4. Clove oil. If your bad tooth is causing throbbing pain, one way to remedy this is to apply some clove oil on the affected tooth. Clove oil is known for its numbing abilities including antibacterial properties which is why it is often used in treating toothache. The oil can sting at first but afterwards you will feel blessed relief.
  5. Warm salt water. Another homemade remedy that you can try when your tooth aches is warm salt water treatment. As the name suggests, you only need to combine half a spoon of salt in a glass of hot water. Stir the mixture and once warm, gargle with it. This remedy can aid in minimizing the swelling in your gums or tooth so that the pain will diminish as well.
  6. Ice cube. To numb the affected area, you can use an ice cube to deaden the pain. Get an ice cube and place it inside a plastic bag. Wrap a cloth around it and apply on the affected area for 15 minutes to deaden the nerves. You can also place it on your cheek near the pained area to provide relief. This is a short term solution though.
  7. Vanilla extract. When toothache is keeping you from doing your work, using vanilla extract can help. Dip a cotton swab in the vanilla extract and apply it on the tooth that hurts. This will help reduce the pain linked to toothache. You will need to repeat this treatment to get the results you need.

As you can see, there are remedies that you can try to keep toothache at bay and the best part is that they completely safe to use.
