8 Prominent Symptoms Of Kidney Failure

Did you know that there are around 2 million nephrons in your kidneys that filter approximately 3–4 liters of blood every 5 minutes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Your kidneys play a critical role in keeping your body healthy. They not only clean the blood but also maintain the right balance of salts and minerals in the body.

Acute kidney failure is a serious condition where your kidneys stop filtering blood, resulting in waste accumulation in the body, which can be fatal.

When it comes to health, you should be well aware of what is right and what is wrong for your body. Given here are 8 common symptoms of kidney disease. If you observe any of these, consult your doctor:

1. Swelling/Inflammation

Any malfunctioning in the kidney means that the blood is not getting purified, which in turn results in waste accumulation. Fluid retention may result in swelling in your legs and feet, and is one of the easiest sign to see if your kidneys are working well.

Your kidney’s health can easily be predicted from the color, texture, and difficulty or easiness while urinating. Following are some of the early symptoms, and you should consult a doctor if you face any of these:

  • Difficulty in urinating
  • Need to exercise extra pressure while urinating
  • Dark or pale colored urine
  • Less-frequent and small amounts of urine
  • Foamy urine
  • Frequent urge to urinate at night

3. Skin Rashes

Waste accumulation in the body can be visible through the texture and color of the skin as well. Itching sensation, rashes, and unhealthy looking skin are some of the symptoms that indicate kidney disease.

EPO or erythropoietin is a hormone produced by the kidney that controls the secretion of red blood cells. When kidneys stop performing their jobs, EPO production gets affected, which results in fatigue and loss of energy. If you feel dizzy and tired throughout the day, and see a change of texture in your urine, you must not delay and go see a doctor.

5. Shortness Of Breath

When your kidneys are not functioning well, your blood is not purified, which brings their  count low. The lower the red blood cells in the body, the lesser the oxygen received by the cells and tissues. This results in shortness of breath.

6. Metal Taste In Mouth

Excess waste in the body can alter the way you taste your food. When your kidneys are not filtering your body fluids, it leaves you with a metallic taste in your mouth and bad breath.

7. Pain In The Upper-Back Region

Your kidneys are placed slightly closer to the upper-back region of your body. Kidney failure can lead to pain in your body. Frequent pain in this region can indicate that something is wrong with the kidneys.

8. Less Focus, Nausea, And Dizziness

While anemia might be one reason for less focus, a malfunction of the kidneys might also cut the blood supply to the brain, resulting in poor concentration. Often, people dealing with kidney issues complain about nausea, light-headedness, and an inability to remember.
