Have you ever heard about “the sunshine vitamin”? Also known as vitamin D, this nutrient is important for overall health and wellness. Humans can make it in their skin after moderate exposure to the sun. Unfortunately, most people don’t get enough sunlight!

Vitamin D isn’t found in many foods, making it hard to meet the body’s requirements.1 That’s why it’s crucial to know if you have a deficiency.

5 Signs Of Vitamin D Deficiency

Here are five signs that might mean you need more vitamin D.

1. Bone Pain

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, making it important for good bone growth. But when you don’t get enough, your bones become brittle and weak. This can eventually lead to bone aches.

The pain usually shows up in the lower back, low extremities, and the pelvic area. It might be hard to do normal things like walking up the stairs.

 2. Muscle Weakness

Muscles are full of vitamin D receptors. Deficiency can cause the muscle to weaken, making it easy to lose balance. The overall physical function also isn’t very strong, which can increase the risk for falls and slips.

 3. Low Mood

Vitamin D controls the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin, a brain chemical that helps mood, social behavior, and decision-making. When vitamin D is low, there isn’t enough serotonin to keep it up.

This causes sadness, anger, and frequent impulse decisions. It might explain why many people feel low during the winter when there’s very little sunshine.

 4. Poor Immunity

Since vitamin D aids T-helper cells, it’s thought to have a role in the immune system.

It can even help white blood cells make more proteins with antibacterial properties.

But without enough vitamin D, you fall ill often. It might be partly why sickness is common during the winter, too.

 5. Frequent Respiratory Infections

Recurring respiratory infections could be another sign.

This may have to do with vitamin D’s powerful role in the immune system. In fact, coughs and upper respiratory infections are commonly seen in adults and children with low vitamin D levels.

And since the vitamin can actually treat (and prevent) tuberculosis, this sign is worth noting.
To get enough vitamin D, eat fortified foods and fatty fish. Expose yourself to enough sun, but do be safe about it! If any of these symptoms sound familiar, talk to your doctor. He can do a blood test and let you know if you need supplements.
